Washed Out – Within and Without

Chillwave (or whatever term you use to describe the lo-fi beachy trend that flooded indie culture last year) is a little stronger and a lot more durable than I had expected. Earlier this year Toro y Moi topped his lo-fi debut with the retro funk stunner, Underneath the Pine. Now, Washed Out’s Ernest Green has released Within and Without, a full-length debut that expands and improves upon his previous EPs. Like the waves his sound summons, this album brings everything to the forefront. The production, vocals and flow here are all dramatic leaps that gently grow within Green’s own artistic vision. First single, “Eyes Be Closed” is certainly a standout, but recently released “Amor Fati” is also brilliant. There isn’t a bad song on the record. Closer, “A Dedication” is a gorgeous drift in sound and songwriting that offers insight into the directions Washed Out may head toward in future releases.
