Most of us know of Spike Jonze for his most recent works, Where The Wild Things Are, Being John Malkovich, and Adaptation. Mr. Jonze, born Adam Spiegel and raised in Maryland, has come a long way from his early childhood. The thing is, he isn’t just another Hollywood film director, and that’s why Walk About. admires him. Spike Jonze has directed music videos for names such as Kanye West, the Beastie Boys, Weezer, Sonic Youth, The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, and many more.
Up for debate as my favorite music video ever (easily ranks in the top 5), take a look at the ingenious work of Jonze in the Beatie Boy’s “Sabotage” video.
Dating even farther back, Spike Jonze started out as a BMX rider and photographer. He joined the Freestylin’ Magazine team where his photographs were featured on multiple covers throughout the 80’s.
Oh yea, he directed skateboard films as well. Here’s a look at some of his work.
He has stuck to his roots even after his successes on the big screen. “Fully Flared” is a skateboarding video that was in part directed by Spike Jonze. It was released in 2007 and won best video at the Transworld Skateboarding Awards the same year.
